“My mother works in the kitchen at Rockrose Resort. We live there all summer. Mother cooks and does the dishes while I’m on summer vacation.”
This is a story about Algot, who one day finds a nice yellow dress in an old cupboard at the Rockrose Resort. He puts it on and calls himself Beatrice because it feels good.
“Mother looks at me and asks if I want to be called Beatrice? I say I want to. And I want to keep the dress if I can. Mom smiles and says that’s good. Then we toast the ice creams together, like me and mom do sometimes when we’ve decided something.”
But perhaps this is first and foremost a story about the difficulty of finding a true friend, about learning to play the harmonica, about unexpected friendship, and about finding a place where you can just be. Maybe a place where you don’t even have to play if you don’t want to, even if you’re a child.
